The ISA Juniors back to Durban in 2003

Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships 2003
August 17 – 23, North Beach, Durban, South Africa

On behalf of Surfing South Africa (SSA) and Quiksilver, the International Surfing Association is pleased to present the invitation to its National Governing Bodies (NGBs) to send a National Team to Durban, South Africa to represent their country in the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships 2003.  The Event will be hosted by Surfing South Africa (SSA), the very same group that organized the memorable ISA World Surfing Games in June 2002.
A rationalization of the ISA’s international events and the decision to provide a singular focus for world junior surfing has resulted in the junior division being withdrawn from the World Surfing Games and amalgamated with what was the Quiksilver World Grommet Titles into a single new event.

In future, one World junior championship will be held annually. The 2003 event will feature U18 and U16 Boys World Championship Divisions as well as an U19 Girls World Championship division. The junior Team World Championship title will also be decided in a separate team contest during the event.

National teams from Argentina, Australia, Barbados, Brazil, Ecuador, France, Hawaii, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, Spain, Tahiti, United Kingdom, USA, Venezuela and of course South Africa, have all indicated to the ISA that they intend on sending teams to the event. More countries are expected to add their names to the list in the next few weeks.

The attendance of your National Team is welcomed as recognition of your position in the surfing world.  This is a historic opportunity for all your young surfers to achieve the highest competitive standards and gain experience that will be invaluable to their career and personal development.

The Official Team Entry Form was sent to all ISA NGBs, along with the Official Invitation on January 17th, 2002.  The Official Team Entry Form is due to ISA and SSA by JANUARY 31, 2003.

ISA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING 2002

November 29 – 30, 2003, Oahu, Hawaii

The ISA Executive Committee (EC), ISA President, Fernando Aguerre and ISA Vice-Presidents, Maile H. Aguerre, Alan Atkins and Ramón Gil Jiménez-Facio, met in Hawaii in late November for their second EC meeting of 2002. This meeting allowed the EC to meet face to face to discuss some of the most important matters at hand for the ISA. Robin de Kock, ISA Vice-President was unable to attend, but was informed of discussion topics before and after the meeting.

Of the several items discussed, one was the merit of ISA Events. The ISA will continue to stress the importance of NGB participation and organization of events such as Tri-Nations, Cultural Exchanges, other inter country events, as well as major ISA Events (WSG, WJSC, etc.) thus making organizations more relevant, more active in governing surfing and bodyboarding in their nation. More information will follow soon from ISA Headquarters via email on contest formats and event packages.

Other items that the EC covered were ISA’s preparations for presenting surfing to major sport organizations (IOC, ODEPA, ODESUR), the future of drug testing, the status of the Judges Website and ISA’s relations with other regional surfing organizations.

The ISA EC and Staff continue in their efforts to work as a team, communicating on a weekly, sometimes daily basis. The ISA is looking forward to a great year with some exciting new events, such as the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships and the ISA/Fosters Masters Surfing Titles.

Thank you for your continued cooperation and support. As usual, please do not hesitate to contact the ISA should you have any questions or concerns.

JUDGING, COACHING AND TECHNICAL DIRECTION SEMINAR

March 14, 15 and 16, 2003 at Hotel Calypsso in Salinas, Ecuador

The Panamerican Surf Association (PASA), with the support, collaboration and financial assistance of the International Surfing Association (ISA) and the Federacion Ecuatoriana de Surfing (FESURF) will run a Seminar (‘Work Shops’) during the days prior to the Panamerican Surfing Games in Salinas, Ecuador. These courses are necessary in order to adequately and appropriately assure the further development of surfing in Latin American countries. The objective is to qualify a group of people of each country, so that in turn, these people will train residents of their respective countries to carry out professional management techniques under the designated National Governing Body (NGB) associated with PASA.

The Seminar Courses are as follows:

Coaching of High Competition* - Dictated by Marcos Conde of Brazil, March 14, 15 & 16

Technical Direction of Events* - Dictated by Marcos Bukao of Brazil, ISA Technical Director, March 16

Judging of High Level – (Speaker and dates to be announced)

Surf School and Surf Camp courses - Dictated by Roberto Mesa of Peru, March 14, 15 & 16

* Schedule of Events for course sent to PASA NGBs via email on January 29.

A Certificate of Participation and a score sheet with the attendee’s evaluation and results will be granted to the course participants. The allocation of these courses is 1 person for the Coaching Course, 1 person for Technical Direction Course, 1 Person for the Surf Schools and Surf Camps Course and 2 People for the Advanced Judging Course. These courses will be COMPLETELY FREE.

It is important that the respective NGBs endorse and confirm all their judges, technical directors and coaches who are taking these courses, via email to PASA, (Antonio Sotillo asfvsurf@c-com.net.ve and Lindsay Nelson lindsay@isasurf.org).

This is a great opportunity that PASA, next to the ISA and FES, is providing for all Pan American NGBs. These courses will be good for the development of the sport and will allow PASA and its NGBs to continue to advance in professionalism, international recognition and for entrance into the Pan Am Games.

SURFING IN THE AMAZON RIVER

Surfing the Amazon river?

By now you have probably heard of surfers surfing in rivers like the one in Munich, Germany.

But now surfers are traveling to the Amazon river to surf the world’s second biggest river. With the changes in the moon’s cycle, when the biggest tide differences occur, there is a phenomenon called pororoca in the Amazon river. This is a wave that is produced by the tidal change.

The awesome tidal bore (up to 12 ft/3.7 m high) travels 500 miles (800 km) upstream and can be very powerful.

The waves only occur twice a day, at the change of tide. And it is only ONE wave that spreads across the river.

Surfers are pulled out into the river, (or paddle from the shore) by boats or jetskis, then let go.

It is basically the same as surfing in the ocean except that if you fall, that is it, you are out, (unless you have a jetski or boat that can rescue you and get you back in front of the wave.)

You are left behind the wave along with one of the world’s most dangerous fish, the piranha. Another danger is all the debris in the water that is swept up by the wave.

But all this does not stop the ever-adventurous surfer, forever searching the planet for the perfect wave.

New Plymouth Boardriders Clubrooms was the base for the weekend, which provided competitors and spectators with a great setting to watch the proceedings. The waves provided competitors with an excellent opportunity to display traditional and modern longboarding. The Golden Breed Nose ride of the event was awarded to Daryn McBride with an exceptional combination of hang 10 and hang 5 maneuvers. However in the 20 minute Open final McBride succumbed to the tricky conditions and had to settle for 4th place. Over 40's legend Brendon Young put on a consistent display of longboarding to take 3rd place. Tent Lillis suffered the same dilemma as McBride and was also a victim of the tricky conditions but managed to finish 2nd. It was Thomas Kibblewhite of Auckland who lead the charge and started with a solid scoring wave and proceeded to back it with 2 further consistent waves to take the 1st win of the series. Kibblewhite with the all-important rating points under his belt will be looking to extend his lead at the 2nd contest of the series at Sandy Bay, Northland February 8th and 9th.

    SOUTH AFRICA

    2003 RIP CURL GROMSEARCH
Surfing South Africa is proud to be associated with Rip Curl SA and pleased to be able to sanction the Rip Curl Gromsearch concept, which has been so successful in Australia and other countries such as Brazil, Spain, France, USA, New Zealand and Portugal.  Cape Town hosted the first event out of the 7 one-off events on January 18 – 19.  The second event is scheduled for East London, February 22 – 23.  The contest aims to uncover and encourage fresh talent along the SA coastline for u16 boys and girls and for u14 and u12’s.  This event will provide a platform for the youngest and keenest surfers to improve their skills.  There are 7 regional events and the top surfers from the u16 boys and girls divisions in each province will get to compete in the Rip Curl Gromsearch Finals, which are planned for November 29 – 30, 2003 in Durban.

    QUIKSILVER GOOD WAVE
February 1 – December 31, 2003 – Durban, South Africa.  Sanction by SSA.
The event will be a first for surfing in that the organizers have allocated an eleven-month waiting period, allowing them to start and finish the contest on the single best surfing day of the year, not necessarily the biggest or flawlessly perfect. "Durban’s surfing perfection is one of the best kept secrets in the world because historically it does not deliver the goods over the international competition season; this event will certainly give Durban it’s due as one of the best city surf breaks on the planet," said Greg Swart of Quiksilver.

Six-man heats will take to the water for thirty minutes, with each surfer’s best two rides counting towards their final heat score. South Africa’s top judges, following international criteria and standards will decide who wins the inaugural event. Jet-skis will be used to tow competitors back into the line-up after each wave, affording surfers more time to choose the best waves. Statistically the event is expected to run either in the cyclone season or in early May, however the conditions will dictate the start of the contest.

The only way a surfer stands the chance of being selected to surf the event is by registering on-line at www.quiksilver.co.za/goodwave An independent selection panel will choose 48 surfers and 60 alternates, with entries closing at midnight on February 7. A one rand entry fee will be payable at the beach on the day of the contest by those selected, with alternates being chosen in the event of any no shows by the 48. "This is a core event catering not exclusively for the top rated surfers but also for good surfers who deserve to be in the event but may not have a professional or amateur rating," said Barry Wolins, Quiksilver Director.

With a diversity of entries already received from top ranking world tour surfers, the Quiksilver Good Wave is poised to show the world what Durban and South African surfers have been enjoying for decades.
