EUROCLUBS 2002

November 1 - 3, Biarritz, La Grand Plage, France

Organizers: European Surfing Federation (ESF) and Biarritz Surf Club

The ESF Euroclubs 2002 ended at Biarritz with a clear victory by the French Bidart Surf Club. Every aspect of the event was carefully taken care of by the organization, the Biarritz Association of Surf Clubs is to be congratulated for it, but the one thing man can not control did not lend a helping hand… Nature.

Strong cross-shore wind, rain and messy waves did not help to bring the contest to the expected level. Still contestants didn’t leave without managing to show everyone present what surfing is all about. Six of the seven expected clubs turned up for the event, namely: Associação de Surf da Costa da Caparica, Portugal; Biarritz Association of Surf Clubs, France; Bidart Surf Club, France; Croyde Surf Club, England; Lacanau Surf Club, France and Karukera Surf Clube, Guadalupe, France.

On day 1, the 1st round entered the water with the sun in the sky; no wind and waves 2-3 feet high. The beach came alive with people enjoying the summer-like day. The waves however didn’t follow the same spirit and went away as the high tide came in. The first round didn’t finish, one single heat was missing final results. With the second day came the earlier mentioned weather conditions. Round one was finished and tied in first place were Biarritz, Bidart and Caparica. An interesting "fight" was in the making. All three clubs had all their athletes still competing. Then came round 2 and the surprise. Caparica lost all its competitors! Biarritz and Bidart were the only strong contestants hoping to take home the title of European Clubs Champion 2002. By the time the final went into the water, Bidart had already secured first position and Lacanau had gone past Caparica into the third spot. Congratulations to all on their performances!

Final results:

1st - Bidart (87 pts)
2nd - Biarritz (73 pts)
3rd - Lacanau (57 pts)
4th - Caparica (42 pts)
5th - Karukera (41 pts)
6th - Croyde (18 pts)

PANAMERICAN SURF ASSOCIATION (PASA)

VISIT WITH MARIO VAZQUEZ RANA

By Maile H. Aguerre, Vice-President PASA and ISA

On a personal trip to Mexico City, I had the opportunity to meet with ODEPA’s President, Mr. Mario Vazquez Rana for 15 minutes. He is the most important person in the world of sports in the Americas.

Together we went over the Solicitude that in the name of PASA, I presented to ODEPA this past August. Mr. President informed me of where PASA stands and what needs to be done for the sport of surfing to be included in the Pan-American Games. We talked about the possibility of putting on a demonstration contest for the Pan-American Games in Santo Domingo 2003 as a preview of the Pan-American Games in Rio in 2007.

I told him that the Brazilian Surfing Confederation (CBS) had met with Mr. Nuzman, (whom is the President of the Brazilian Olympic Committee), who has said that they support surfing in the Pan-American Games in Rio 2007.

His answer was that "all in due time", indicating that surfng is not ready yet.

To be included in the Pan-American Games, PASA needs a minimum of 14 countries to be recognized by their National Olympic Committees.

At the present time the following countries are recognized:

1. Argentina
2. Brasil
3. Ecuador                                                                                                                                           4. Guatemala                                                                                                                                                   5. Panama
6. Puerto Rico
7. Uruguay

The following countries have pending applications:

1. Mexico*
2. Peru*
3. United States*                                                                         4. Venezuela
*Please let me know what the status of your applications is.

What I need now from each NGB that is not yet recognized by your National Olympic Committee, is for you to contact me immediately so we can see what we need to do to start the process and how I can help you. I have a lot of experience accumulated which surely can help you with this process quicker.

I must impress upon you that this is the single MOST IMPORTANT thing to be done at the present moment. I also must mention that this is YOUR NGB’s part, (YOUR NGB’s RESPONSIBILITY) in helping surfing reach its goal of being included in the Olympic Games. No one but your own NGB can begin this process, I am more than happy to help once in the process, so let’s get going.and get surfing to the level it belongs

I am here to help you. Use me. That is one of the reasons you elected me to be your Vice-President. I am totally committed in succeeding in this . With your help, together we can achieve this dream of participating not only in the Pan-American Games but also in the Olympic Games.

November 9 – 10, Salinas, Beach of the FAE
With great success, the 2nd date of the Interscholastic Surfing Championships for the children and youth was held in Salinas, Beaches of the FAE. The surfers did a good show on their own in all kinds of waves. All the heats were competed on Saturday, beginning with U15, U12, and U10 in 15-minute heats with 4 riders in the water. In the U15 category, Adrian Dapelo’s selection of good waves favored him in embarking on tubular sections, which resulted in good scores. Jose Catan, Ivan Maleve and Lucas Costa came in 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively. The U18 was left for Sunday. It was a day with greater reception among the young surfers. In first was Jose A. Ruiz, an athlete of the Colegio Nuevo Mundo of Salinas. With much talent, he succeeded in getting on some long running waves. Sebastian Santos came in second, Daniel Guerrero and Lucas Costa tied for third place.
More than 30 schools with respective athletes in distinct categories have been recorded for all the coast of Ecuador, including the provinces of Galapagos, Esmeraldas, Manabi and Guayas. 3rd EVENT OF THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS OF SURF

26 – 27 October, 2002, Salinas (PacoIllescas and Mar Bravo, FAE)

Felipe Rodriguez won the mens open final with a choice of waves between 5 and 6 feet. His maneuvers were executed with much control. Andres Fernandez placed second by showing the most fluidity in his movements and control of the waves. Manuel Lozano was also fluid and the only back sider who showed his high level with his return to competition. In fourth was Marcos Goncalvez, national champion in 2001. He was the most radical with the most powerful maneuvers, but lacked control to finish with the most points in the final.

In the U18 Juniors, Carlos Borbor took first place. He surfed big waves with fluidity and control, executing rollers in the most crucial part of the wave. Daniel Guerrero was second with the most tenacity in maneuvers, hitting the waves vertically at their most critical sections. Third was Carlos Goncalvez with a good backside and a style promising more to come. Jose A. Ruiz was fourth with style, fluidity and also a great technique.

Francisco Posada won the Longboard Category with a good selection of large waves. He surfed them while walking on his board, which is what gave him the most points. The second place was a surprise with Joao Ayala (king of the beach) who also accumulated good points in the final followed by Cesar Moreira, Fernando Garcia and Jimmy Santos successively.

The category that drew the most attention was the ladies category, with a final of 3 women in 5 – 6 foot waves. Andrea Vinuesa, with experience and control in big waves, surfed very well. Liset Prado, who was at the head of the heat for most of the time took three long waves and surfed them in the crucial zone where the wave was very fast. The third place went to Cinthia Layana, great surfer, who somehow did not catch the good waves.

The Bodyboard category was the young talent of Montanita Pascual Rosales with radical maneuvers and aerials winning over the champion Jorge Maldonado, who was ok with second place. Third was Carlos Bustos and fourth was Ricardo Martinez. Results below:

NEW ZEALAND

AUAHI KORE MAORI SURFING TITLES, Sanctioned by SNZ

October 26 - 28, Taranaki, New Plymouth

The stamina and endurance of the country's top Maori surfers was put to the test during the last weekend of October at the Auahi Kore Aotearoa Maori Surfing Titles in Taranaki (New Plymouth). On day 2, Daniel Kereopa won the open men's division with an impressive display of power, speed, control and class, giving him the highest score of the contest, scoring 23.00 out of a possible 30. Morehu Roberts was the stand out the whole event carving and slashing his way into the open, juniors and cadets finals. Roberts ended up winning the cadets division, with a total heat score of 21.15. Another standout was one of Taranaki's most renowned surfers, Jason Matthews, who returned to the competitive scene after a 4-year absence. Matthews entered 3 divisions, made 2 finals and eventually won the Long-board division on a borrowed board. Open Womens winner, Kelly Clarkson managed to win the title on her last wave with one minute remaining. The finals were a well-contested affair with the lead changing consistently between Clarkson, Jess Terrill, Kylie Pullen and Jess Santorik.

Surfing New Zealand Maori coordinator Steve Ria said "We are very grateful to Auahi Kore (Smokefree) who have supported this event since 1997 by providing guidelines toward helping Maori to stop smoking and encouraging others not to start." said Ria. "The Auahi Kore program supports those Maori who want or have chosen to lead a healthy lifestyle by not smoking. We develop partnerships with the community through the support of important Maori events in sport and culture and surfing is a sport that provides our people with a pathway to better health." said Trevor Shailer from the Health Sponsorship Council.

"The Maori Titles is more than a surfing competition," Ria says. "It's a spiritual awareness for some, a learning curve for others but most importantly, it's a time when family and friends can come together through their tribal links to experience kotahitanga (being as one)."

BILLABONG / OCEANBRIDGE 2002 5A NZ PRO
November 9 – 10, 2002, Maori Bay, Muriwai, Auckland’s West Coast
The sun was out and shinning on Larry Fisher of Raglan as he took out the Billabong/Oceanbridge 5A SNZ Pro on Sunday, November 10th at Maori Bay. Fisher's open title has been a long time coming and was a popular win with the crowd as he exhibited a solid performance. Finishing in second was Chris Millet who also looked comfortable as conditions tested patience and skill levels. Narrowly placing third was Bobby Hansen. Matt Bennett finished in fourth position after falling off the pace from his earlier semi final win.

Matt Scorringe dominated the junior men's under 18 final blowing up with a heat score of 16 from a possible 20. Number 2 seed, Dan Scott was on a roll winning every heat on the way to the final but had to settle for second place to the in-form Scorringe. Third place went to Mike Banks who unfortunately broke his board on the first wave. Matt Bowen (Russell) did well to finish in fourth position.

The Women's event title was open with Matisse Patterson taking first position. Taranaki's Jess Terrill was unlucky not to find a high scoring second wave having to settle for second position. Kylie Pullen and Alexandra Monteith placed 3rd and 4th overall respectively.

This was the 5th event of 7, making up the Surfing New Zealand 2002 Pro Circuit. The event featured NZ’s top 84 competitors vying for valuable circuit rating points leading into the final stages of the 2002 Circuit. 2002 McCORMACKS TAVERN CANTERBURY SURFING CHAMPS, SNZ PRO 2A
November 15 – 17, 2002, Gore Bay, North Canterbury - 7th contest on the SNZ national circuit series.
Rain, hail, sleet, and surf are what competitors had to deal with on the final day of the 2002 McCormack's Tavern Canterbury Surfing Championships. With valuable points up for grabs and $9000.00 worth of cash and prizes the adverse conditions did not deter the spirits of the conditioned campaigners who were more than accustomed to the ever changing conditions that are associated with the sport of surfing.

North Island surfers dominated the Open Men’s Final with the ever present Manu Schafer flying the flag for the South Island crew. Schafer who has been a consistent winner on the South Island Circuit, had to settle for 3rd place this time around. However it was Justin Souter (BOP) who took top honors. Finishing in 2nd position was Luke Harwood. 4th place went to Marc Moore.

In the Outer Island Junior division, Mike Banks seemed to be the pick of the very talented group. Banks took out the final with ease, with the surprise of the final being the young up and coming Jon Hardaker taking 2nd. Nat Parsons and Haami Pou finished 3rd and 4th respectively. The Hapuku Café Longboard final saw the competitors hiding under their boards as the hail that started in the Women's final carried on for a good 5 minutes.

Veteran Christchurch surfer Glen Shuker made no race of the Longboard final leaving Aaron Surgenor and Simon Dickie to fight it out for 2nd and 3rd with Nick Black finishing 4th. Shuker's style and skill, along with his uncanny luck with the best waves, made him a pleasure to watch. Long time competitive veterans Johnny Fenton and Ratso Buchanan, fought it out with Aaron Surgenor and Sam Bradley in the Esplanade Liquorland Seniors. Johnny Fenton was heard to say after the final, "I'm so stoked to have finally beaten you after all these years Ratso."

The Anarchy Eyewear / Barron Surfboard Masters had Ratso again 2nd, but this time to Glen Shuker, with Neil Robb and Dean Cooke 3rd and 4th respectively. The 7th Wave Cadets had Cole Barlow and Levi O'Connor fighting out the final. Barlow picked up 2 high scoring waves that saw him pick up an easy
win to reverse the 1st and 2nd placings from the final of the Cape Classic in Westport a few weeks ago. Tully Forest and Sam Dunfoy finished 3rd and 4th respectively.

The Gravis Footwear Women's final had Leilan Morgan pick up the top cash prize from Pai Pou in a tight fight for 1st and 2nd. The hailstorm, during this heat had the woman walking back up the beach through a blanket of white rather than a nice sandy beach in the tropical South Pacific.

SOUTH AFRICA

QUIKSILVER SOUTH AFRICAN SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS

September 23 – 28, 2002, Victoria Bay, Southern Cape, South Africa

Border Surfriders Association (BSA) successfully defended the President’s Cup at the 2002 Quiksilver SA Surfing Championships, which is the biggest contest on SSA’s annual calendar. The East London based team, who won the premier inter-provincial trophy for the first time in 36 years in their home surf last year, had a remarkable final day at the tournament, filling eight of the 32 places in the finals to beat Western Province and Kwa-Zulu Natal.

The premier Men’s Open SA title went to Antonio Bortoletto (KZN) whose focused approach and progressive surfing throughout the six-day event reaped the rewards they richly deserved. Bortoletto consigned Brad Bricknell (Bor) to his second successive runner-up spot, to go with the SA open title the East Londoner earned at Vic Bay in 1996, while Lyle Bottcher (KZN) and Ewald van Heerden clinched third and fourth places respectively.

Tamarys Walters (KZN) made it two Open Women’s titles in a row, by holding off the challenge of Eastern Province’s Robyn Basnett and Michelle Hill with Lynette Geraghty (WP) placing fourth. Former SA U/18 SA champ, Tara Hossack (WP), piped defending U/20 Girls champ Natasha Bastenie (Bor) at the post to secure this year’s title. These two finished ahead of the Robarts twins from Boland, with Tammy placing third and Penny in fourth.

Ricky Basnett (KZN) was simply outstanding in the U/20 Boys final despite having had to fight his way through three rounds of tough repercharge heats to get there. Easter Province’s Ryan Payne proved he has the surfing talent to go with his national and international judging credentials by securing the runner-up spot ahead of KZN teammates Matthew Kruger and Dylan Stewart.

The Masters final saw a ding dong battle develop between former two time SA Open champions Dean Geraghty (WP) and Wayne Monk (Bor), with the latter the defending champion in the 38 – 35 year age category. At the final siren it was Geraghty who captured his third SA title, while Monk took silver ahead of teammate Andre Malherbe and Clayton Nienaber (KZN). Defending Grand Masters title-holder and former world pro-am champ, David Malherbe (Bor), was again too strong for the opposition, relegating WP big wave expert Mickey Duffus to second spot and KZN’s Rob Moore-Boyle and Stu Bell to bronze and copper respectively.

Grant Reid, the only survivor from last year’s Veterans final, moved up from fourth to first to wrest the title from Border pair Dave Fish and Brian Heathcote, with Boland’s Martin Rennhakkamp taking fourth this year. The Supervets (over 51 years) had just a single five person heat at the 2002 Quiksilver SA Surfing Championships but these dedicated old-timers put on a great show with John McLeod (Bol) taking the title ahead of Marc Maingard (WP), Glen Bowles (EP), Rod Hossack (SC) and Andy Austin (Bor).

The Academy Cup produced the highest level of surfing yet seen from the graduates of the Surfing South Africa (SSA) development academy, who impressed everyone with their improvement over the past year. Craig Johnson and teammate Josh Salie made it a one-two for WP while Lungani Memani added his third place points to Border’s winning total and Meshack Mqadi (SN) repeated his final’s appearance of the 2001, taking fourth place this time. Individual titles in the U18, U16 and U14 divisions were also at stake in the African Surfing Federation (ASF) sanctioned event and all three went the way of South Africa. ISA World Junior Champion and recently crowned National U18 champion, Warwick Wright added the Quiksilver Junior Challenge U18 title to his list of 2002 achievements while SA Team "rookie" Brandon Roberts took honors in the U16 division. U14 honors went the way of talented South African, Jordan Smith.

The individual heats were run using the International Surfing Association (ISA) "double elimination" system and the Quiksilver Team trophy was decided using the ISA Tag Team formula with five surfers from each team competing in an all action 40 minute heat. Quiksilver, the sponsors of the Junior International Challenge were the main sponsors of the 2002 ISA World Games in Durban held in June and are the sponsors of the annual South African Championships. HEADWORX BPSA UK TOUR 2002 – Event 7

Headworx North East PBSA Surfing Champs - November 2 –3, Cayton Bay, North Yorkshire

Mark Harris charged in epic conditions on the East Coast and put his tour title back on track. The final was held at high tide at Bunkers in the best waves of the tour this year and pitted Alan Stokes and Mark Harris against Headworx team riders Nathan Phillips and Llewellyn Whitaker. Stokes had the perfect start with a barrel that was in the excellent range, but fell or got caught by the other tubes he tried to ride. Nathan had the crowd hooting with an audacious air but failed to land it and couldn’t find the waves that connected through to the inside. Llewellyn’s backhand attack was so committed and aggressive; he was shifting bucket-fulls of water from the lip in each turn, but Harris was focused and chose the best waves and carved them all the way to the beach winning easily with three high scoring rides. The win keeps Harris at the top of the ratings but Stokes is still in touch and it’s all set up for an exciting final event at Croyde in North Devon on the November 9 – 10th.

HEADWORX BPSA UK TOUR 2002 – Event 8 (Final)

Headworx North Devon Open - November 9 – 10, Croyde/Lynmouth
Nathan Phillips from Llantwit broke two boards on the way to killing the Headworx North Devon Open held at Croyde and Mark Harris grabbed second place consolidating his ratings lead to take the British Professional Championship title for 2002. The last event of the year saw great waves again although the onshore winds make it hard work for the competitors in the solid overhead waves. Johnny Fryer was flying in the semis and booked his final berth with an awesome lefthander, which he destroyed with three massive turns pushing the challenging Harris into second place. Drama unfolded in the other semi as Alan Stokes wave magnet finally stopped working and the welsh combo of Mark Vaughan and Nathan Phillips ended the new Animals riders chance of overall title. Phillips broke his favorite board on his last wave of the heat. The final opened with Harris blazing and taking off on a set wave pulled the biggest floater of the weekend causing the car park to erupt with hoots. Phillips however was plugging away smashing any lip that dared to feather in front of him. He snapped his second board half way through he final and grabbed a third board and a second high scoring wave to seal victory and his third place on the ratings board. Mark Harris wins £2000 for his winter travels and second place overall Alan Stokes picks up a cool £1000 consolation prize.
